One of the leading names of digital culture, Lev Manovich, predicted that in the 1990s cinema and digital media would intertwine and that, with the end of the analogue era, the cinema would evolve into a digital medium: the cinema and computers were going to “become one”. Today, when we can easily watch the content from digital environments such as computers, mobile phones, YouTube, and video and consider them “cinema,” we can say that Manovich’s prophecy has become fulfilled. Cinema education cannot be “fictionalized” anymore by taking into consideration only the cinema of the movie theaters; the context of cinema needs to be extended to the various digital media, and the relationship between these media and traditional films needs to be studied in depth.
A “cinema and digital media” education finds its soul in “critical thinking”—the leading component of a university education—and in “creativity”. At the Izmir University of Economics, you will get an education of international scope (although the national level will not be neglected), where theory and practice will be thoroughly intertwined.
We join cinema with the technical world of digital media, and we expose the digital media to the artistry and eloquence of the cinema. Under the name “Cinema and Digital Media”, our department is the first in Turkey to accept students. Medium of instruction is english.
