NECS Statement on Russian War on Ukraine

The European Network for Cinema and Media Studies, NECS, strongly condemns Russia’s ongoing attack on Ukraine. This war hits a country which is home to some of our members and upholds the same values on which NECS is also founded. This invasion is not only an attack on Ukraine, but on our shared values of tolerance, peace and care. We stand with the people of Ukraine and their country. We also support all Russian and Belarusian citizens who are courageously protesting against the invasion, just as we stand with all people willing to act, share and help war refugees. The Steering Committee of NECS joins organizations such as ECREA in their appeal to its members to actively influence the politics of their respective countries to aid Ukraine and make their contribution to ending the armed confrontation.

Furthermore, the SC has passed the following resolution as a reaction to the current situation.

  1. We are preparing a donation plan to support the survival of Cinema and Media Studies institutions in Ukraine.
  2. We are offering a waiver of our membership fees for all Ukrainian colleagues, who want to become a member and use our network and international job market service. If you want to use this opportunity or need assistance with what’s possible, please write to supportATnecs.org.
  3. We have initiated a collaboration with our academic colleagues from the Lviv Urban Media Archive, which has now been turned into a shelter. NECS is organizing an online seminar with UMA to help them with a currently initiated project to preserve the public information and individual voices and experiences about the war developments and refugee crisis in Ukraine for future researchers, archives and eventual legal procedures. More information about this initiative will follow.
  4. To assist Ukrainian colleagues and students of Cinema and Media fleeing the war, we have assembled the following open list with information, potential stipends, or other forms of support. Anyone wanting to add info is welcome to send further links (supportATnecs.org), particularly if your university offers possibilities for students, too. This might also apply to colleagues from Russia and Belarus, who are openly opposing the war and as such face consequences in their home countries.

Poland:

Statement from the Polish Society for Film and Media Studies

As members of the Polish Society for Film and Media Studies, we wholeheartedly support our friends from Ukraine. In the face of the constantly increasing numbers of war refugees in Poland, we feel all the more responsible for their situation. We can only imagine the enormous trauma of being forced to leave one's home and entire life behind only to find oneself amid completely new and foreign circumstances, uncertain of what tomorrow might bring. As the Polish film and media studies community, we would like to extend a helping hand to our colleagues in their time of need: we offer our solidarity, a safe and friendly space to continue your work and our supportive presence. Polish academic institutions have launched a variety of support initiatives - the list is updated continuously, and we'll be glad to share any information with you.

Whenever you need us – we’re here for you.

It happened then. It’s happening now

Adrian Horodecky recently completed a film about his Ukrainian family's escape from the Russians in World War II. "Olga's Odyssey” is the story of his mother Olga Leskiw, who was born in western Ukraine in 1931, survived Stalin's Holodomor famine-genocide of 1932, escaped the Russians in 1944, lived in a German DP camp for 5 years, and went to America in 1949 to live her life.

You are all very welcome to use the movie as part of online programs of Ukrainian films. For access to the film: https://vimeo.com/685194810, the trailer can be found here: https://vimeo.com/685950965. More information: Olga on facebook
