Children coping with COVID-19: Intersectional understandings of film and media access in a crisis

As a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic and resulting lockdowns across the world, digital access has become paramount, as many aspects of education have moved online. At the same time, many continue to face significant barriers in access to online learning, which are frequently informed by intersectional disadvantage. Justine Atkinson and Firdoze Bulbulia share their research on film education projects located in South Africa, Argentina, the Netherlands, India and Ethiopia, which successfully adapted to online delivery, and reflect on how these projects were used to inform, entertain and educate children in a range of innovative ways.

The session will be hosted by Dr Chris Nunn (University of Greenwich)

Friday 26 November, 16.30-17.30 GMT

Using film in the Curriculum for Excellence

The Scottish Curriculum for Excellence recognises film as a text and a resource that can be used across different subjects to enhance students’ learning. But how do teachers in Scotland actually incorporate film as part of their teaching practice? Michael Daly (Drumchapel High School, Glasgow) hosts a discussion with English and Media colleagues Jacqueline Thomson (John Paul Academy, Glasgow), Louise Sedgewick (St Margaret’s Academy, West Lothian) and Fraser Johnston (St Mungo’s Academy, Falkirk) on the various ways teachers can use film as part of their practice.

The events are free to attend and are geared both towards those with a specific interest in film education, and those interested in film culture and practice more generally. Both events will be live captioned (speech-to-text).
