We would like to express a warm welcome to everyone coming to Lodz for the 9th annual NECS conference. We are pleased to present the programme, which gives an overview of the academic discussions.
The programme consists of more than 100 panels and workshops. You will also notice that during this year’s conference we have introduced a new format: Project Forum, which has been designed as a platform for exchanging information on the upcoming research projects and recently published books. Speaking of books, a wide range of publications will be also available for purchase during the Publishers Forum. Moreover, the Conference will be accompanied by two workshops: Graduate Workshop and Transmediality in Modern Popular Culture workshop, hosted by Art_Inkubator in Fabryka Sztuki – a city culture institution located in the premises of the 19th century factory complex.
As the name itself suggests, the main focus of this year’s conference circles around the topic of archives and archivist practices, which constitute a vital dimension of media culture. And so we will inevitably have to face the question: how to collect and exhibit audiovisual heritage? Therefore we are pleased to host four distinguished keynote speakers who, each day during the plenary meetings, will share their insights on this matter. A special welcome to Giovanna Fossati (EYE Film Institute Netherlands), Oliver Grau (Danube University in Krems), Krzysztof Wodiczko (Harvard Graduate School of Design) and Marysia Lewandowska (Artist in Residence at the Asia Art Archive in Hong Kong) who agreed to share their ideas.
Apart from the conference in more or less traditional sense of the term, a series of special events will take place. Among them extraordinary screening of “Enthusiasts” – a project that consists of Polish amateur movies framed by one of our special guests, Marysia Lewandowska, to watch a set of short films prepared by Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz in the cooperation with Educational Film Studio in Lodz featuring short productions about art and see Oscar-winnig “Ida” produced by Opus Film.
Moreover, we would like to invite you on 20th of June to the farewell party that will take place in Art_Inkubator in Fabryka Sztuki to collect a few more memories to take them back home with you.
Last but not least: if you only have such a possibility, extend your stay in Lodz for one more day – we have prepared for you a touristic programme that consists of guided tours to the Jewish Cemetery in Lodz which dates back to 1811, and to Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz, which holds a great collection of the 20th century art.
Of course, none of this would be possible if it was not for the financial and organisational support of our sponsors and institutions that have helped to make this year’s event possible. Many thanks to:
- The main organiser and sponsor: University of Lodz
- Co-organiser and sponsor: University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw SWPS
